ISSA Section for Electricity

Welcome to the ISSA Section on Prevention of Occupational Risks due to Electricity - Gas - Long-Distance Heating - Water

Ensuring safety and health at the workplace has been since long recognised a basic humanitarian principle. That means for the Electricity Section protection of workers against:

- electrical accidents and
- occupational diseases
due to electricity and ionizing radiation.

As for Europe, each year of the 120 million workers in the EU, roughly 10 million suffer an accident or occupational disease at work. 8000 die as a result of work-related accidents or illnesses.

The economic costs of all these accidents are immense. They are estimated at a magnitude which roughly corresponds to one-quarter of the EU´s entire annual budget.

Already in the late sixties of the last century, some farsighted people from accident prevention institutions in various European countries realised that the improvement of safety and health at the workplace was a task beyond national interest. They joined forces and decided to co-operate in this field on an international basis.

This was how the International Sections of the ISSA were founded and charged with the promotion of occupational safety and health in the different branches of industry.

The Electricity Section was set up in June 1970.

An important international forum for scientists and practitioners, the Section has become an acknowledged information and exchange centre for everyone interested in the promotion of safety and health standards in the electricity and gas supply industries.
